Medical diagnostic devices and life science components

Filtrona Porous Technologies fluid handling components are used in wound care applications, diagnostic devices, surgical instrument devices, and other medical products. Filtrona Porous Technologies fiber and foam technology components function as liquid transfer wicks and absorptive media and filters. They are also used in many other healthcare applications involving capillary transfer or the dispensing and/or absorption of liquids.

TRANSORB® Wicks and liquid transfer Media are used as wicking components in lateral flow diagnostic devices, such as midstream pregnancy and ovulation tests and in other applications requiring the collection and transfer of sample liquids or reagents.

New and improved TRANSORB® rapid diagnostics media remains ideal for use as sample, absorbent, and conjugate pad applications for lateral flow diagnostic devices. New equipment has broadened the performance characteristics and the available material selection in fully customizing the media to test applications. Product is available in rolls, sheets, pre-cut strips or pads, and in color.

  • TRANSORB® Wicks and Media feature low protein binding and highly uniform liquid flow characteristics. Transorb Wicks
  • The wicks and media are custom designed to control the rate of flow and amount of liquid delivered to the test site.
  • They may be treated to block or inhibit nonspecific binding.
  • TRANSORB® Wicks and Media are constructed using synthetic fibers to optimize the uniformity of liquid transfer characteristics.
  • They may be engineered to select capillarity and sample volumes.
  • High tensile strength delivers optimum processing mechanics in roll stock form.
  • Filtrona Porous Technologies media are more resistant to crimping or tearing versus as cellulose-based products.
  • In-house fiber processing and development enables lot-to-lot consistency and within-lot uniformity.

Lendell Medical Grade Foam for Wound Care: Lendelwound_care_picture.jpgl MediSponge® foam is an ultra-clean absorbent foam ideal for wound care applications, high exudating wounds, and other medical grade applications. Featuring Microbisan™ controlled-release Silver-Ion technology, Filtrona Porous Technologies foam can also provide both antibacterial and antifungal protection. These foams are specifically engineered for the medical industry. Silicon, catalyst, and latex-free formulations conform to the stringent needs of healthcare applications. Formulations can be tailored to maximize absorption and retention.

Diagnostic Reservoirs: TRANSORB® Reservoirs are used as the downstream absorptive media in flow-through diagnostic devices and in other applications requiring the absorption and retention of excess liquid. Click here for a demonstration.

Diagnostic Reservoirs

  • TRANSORB® Reservoirs are typically designed with 90 percent voids volume and high capillarity to enhance liquid transfer and maximize absorptive capacity.
  • The reservoir design can be modified to assist in the control of liquid absorption rates.

Oral Fluid Collection Media: TRANSORB® SCM [Saliva Collection Media] is ideal for obtaining oral fluid diagnostic samples. Filtrona customizes the collection media for optimum saliva absorption and recovery of targeted analytes. Component materials are self-contained and structurally sound, with no fraying or shedding. Transorb SCM components can be made compressible to help eliminate the need for centrifugation, and nonabrasive to maximize comfort and prevent the introduction of blood contaminants. Other qualities include:

  • food grade componentsOral Fluid Collection Media
  • engineered absorption capacity with hydrophilic saliva capturing properties.
  • targeted analyte recovery, depending on the media structure’s polymer mix and surface treatment.
  • applications include drugs of abuse, hormone analysis, infectious disease, and others.
  • blocked to inhibit nonspecific binding
  • Transorb® SCM's component formula yields industry leading THC (marijuana) recovery levels in the 95th percentile down to 5 ng/ml for drugs of abuse application.

Pipette Filter Media: Filtrona Porous Technologies bonded fiber filter media is uniquely suited to the demand for filter barriers for pipette tips used in laboratory microbiological sample analysis, PCR, isotrope work, and other applications, such as serotological pipette tip filters. Being fiber-based and not plastic, our products provide a host of performance characteristics that better protect liquid samples and pipettors from aerosol or other contamination and offer superior ease of handling and pipetting. Pipette Tip Filters

  • Polyolefin fibers aligned along the flow direction create a directionally porous structure to optimize filtration efficiency while allowing uniform air flow through the filter during pipetting.
  • Bonded fiber tip filters feature smaller pore size yet less flow resistance. Pore size may be finely tuned down to 1.5 microns while maintaining sufficient flow resistance.
  • Bonded fibers are typically more resilient than porous plastic, providing a slight "give" to the product. This resiliency allows for a snug, custom fit during assembly without damaging the tip itself and ensures against bypass aerosol transfer in the act of pipetting.
  • Static, debris, and dust throughout the product and product packaging are minimized due to the bonding nature of the manufacturing process.
  • Possible incorporate of color with the tip filters as a feature of differentiation.
  • Liquid repelling and aerosol removal filter designs are available to protect pipettors from aerosol, radiation, and liquid contamination.

Pre-Filter Media: TRANSORB® Pre-Filter Media functions as a depth filter in sample preparation and other applications requiring the filtration or separation of undesired solid or aerosol substances. Click here for a demonstration.

  • TRANSORB® Pre-Filter Media are well suited for heat- and moisture-exchange applications.
  • Filtration efficiencies can be provided within the range of 4 to 100 microns for liquids and 1 to 100 microns for gases.
  • Depth provides scope and structure, volume, and capacity.
  • This media can be surface modified for covalent binding applications.

Life Science Active Media: Filtrona Porous Technologies Surface Active Media is a unique product that uses patent-pending and proprietary fiber manufacturing techniques. Filtrona Porous Technologies fibers contain active carboxyl or amine groups that serve as substrates for a wide range of specific biological compounds and derivitized chemistries. This provides a platform for attachment of cross-linking moieties, allowing specific covalent bonding chemistries to be incorporated into genetic and protein separation devices. These separation components are well suited for high speed assembly into microtiter wells in addition to S.P.E. columns and other test platforms.

Filtrona Porous Technologies Surface Active Media was developed to increase test platform performance and versatility. It is custom manufactured to fit microtiter well and other test formats. Surface Active Media product applications include

  • ELISA Tests
  • pipette Tip filters
  • DNA Purification
  • protein Isolation
  • sample Preparation
  • centrifuge filtration
  • 96 well filtration
  • 384 well filtration
